Alberta Midland Railway Terminal (AMRT) is a rail logistics centre strategically located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. We provide third party rail logistics services to world-class industrial, energy and agricultural customers.

The terminal is located west of the Town of Lamont and off CN’s Secondary Mainline between Edmonton and Winnipeg. AMRT offers scheduled switching, and consistent local CN service. The terminal is designed for the efficient exchange of traffic between CN and AMRT.

Rail Logistics in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland

Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is Canada’s largest hydro-carbon processing centre, and rail transportation is critical to the region. Building upon the success of a southern Alberta rail logistics facility operated by R.K. Heggie Grain, AMRT founder Darcy Heggie set out to acquire land and establish the company that now has become Alberta Midland Railway Terminal.

Corporate Development, Permitting, and Construction

Once the strategic lands that AMRT now owns in Lamont County were acquired, AMRT put together a group of shareholders and equity partners to develop Phase 1 of a rail logistics centre, partnering with CN and two key anchor clients. After a successful community consultation and receipt of development permits from Lamont County, construction began on the rail yard in July of 2016.

The Dream Becomes Reality

Phase 1 of AMRT is designed as a reserved rail car storage facility that became operational in 2017. Mobile rail car servicing and repair work can be conducted on site, and specialty switching services are offered. AMRT is operated by Canadian Northern Plains Rail Services, a sister company to AMRT shareholder Northern Plains Railroad which successfully operates a 350 route mile short line in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Future Plans

AMRT has plans to complete the entire suite of trackage – representing approximately 850 rail car storage spots on its property in 2019. AMRT can offer further property for industrial development and additional rail services. Call us today to discuss your interests.
