Alberta Midland Railway Terminal (AMRT) is a rail logistics centre strategically located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. We provide third party rail logistics services to world-class energy and agricultural customers.

The terminal is located west of the Town of Lamont and off CN’s Secondary Mainline between Edmonton and Winnipeg. AMRT offers scheduled switching, and consistent local CN service. The terminal is designed for the efficient exchange of traffic between CN and AMRT.

Successful Model to Build From

More than a decade and a half ago Ron Heggie was a co-founder of Transmark, a rail logistics centre near Lethbridge. It was developed out of a simple need to get feed for cattle into Southern Alberta during one of Alberta’s worst summer droughts. As Transmark grew, synergies developed around the services the property could offer. One such development was the Lethbridge Inland Terminal, the creation of Darcy Heggie – a young entrepreneur, and Norman Fodness, an experienced grain industry executive who together with the support of local investors and colonies successfully created the Lethbridge Inland Terminal – a producer-owned modern grain handling facility. With the support of Canadian Pacific, Transmark has been a success story serving many industrial clients, including car storage customers, trans-loading agricultural products, handling large windmill projects, and serving the southern Alberta energy industry.

Could the Model be Successful Elsewhere?

Why not The Edmonton Region and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland – Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing centre as well as an agribusiness hub. The Railways thought so, and so did a multitude of customers doing business with R.K. Heggie Grain and Transmark. With this in mind, in 2011 Darcy Heggie set out to acquire the land and establish the company that has now become Alberta Midland Railway Terminal Ltd. After a successful community consultation process and receipt of development permits, construction on the AMRT Lamont quarter began in summer 2016.

The Dream Becomes Reality

Phase 1 of AMRT is designed as a rail car storage project – fully operational in November 2017. Mobile rail car servicing is available on site, and AMRT features transload options for dry commodities, industrial products, and over dimensional shipments. Now operational, AMRT’s shareholder base features its contracted rail operator – Northern Plains Rail Services, a sister company to the Northern Plains Railroad who safely and successfully operate a 350 mile network in Minnesota and North Dakota. AMRT’s anchor client – Pembina Pipelines is a respected and growing Canadian energy company that AMRT is proud to work for.
